Visualize EQuIS Geotech Data in Civil 3D

EQuIS Geotech provides a direct, standards-driven pathway from validated subsurface data to Autodesk Civil 3D with no plug-ins, middleware, or custom API work required. The Association of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Specialists (AGS) established AGS 4.0 as the industry standard for transferring geotechnical data between systems. Civil 3D's Geotechnical Modeler accepts AGS 4.0 files directly, requiring no additional software layers or custom development. EQuIS Geotech exports data in full AGS 4.0 format via the Geotechnical Export - AGS 4 Report, preserving units, metadata, and coding standards throughout the workflow. This enables engineers to generate borehole logs, cross-sections, and 3D stratigraphic surfaces in Civil 3D without manual formatting, thus reducing data loss and translation risk. Organizations can automate AGS delivery through EQuIS Information Agents (EIAs), keeping design teams aligned with current, quality-controlled information.

Civil 3D Workflow

Step 1. Data Preparation in EQuIS

Geotechnical data resides in the EQuIS Geotech Schema, supporting comprehensive data types:

Drilling observations, sample information, and field geological descriptions

Laboratory test results including particle size distribution, density, moisture content, Atterberg limits, compaction, and strength testing

In situ testing data from standard penetration tests, cone penetration tests, vane tests, and hand penetrometer measurements

Monitoring installations, groundwater data, and environmental contaminant analysis

Data validation occurs in EQuIS Professional or Enterprise before export. Teams verify depth units remain consistent per location and data type. EQuIS enforces AGS 4.0 decimal precision standards, ensuring numeric values maintain proper formatting for Civil 3D import.

Step 2. AGS 4.0 Export

EQuIS maps Geotech Schema fields directly to AGS 4.0 format through the Geotechnical Export - AGS 4 Report. The export preserves units, metadata, and coding standards without post-processing. Users filter results by task code, generating AGS files for specific projects or exporting all geotechnical data from a facility.

The report handles character conversion automatically: µ becomes u, ° becomes deg, Ω becomes ohm, and ± becomes +/-. The export produces comprehensive AGS sections spanning project information, field observations, laboratory test results, in situ testing data, monitoring installations, and environmental contaminant analysis.

3. Import EQuIS Geotech Data into Autodesk Civil 3D

Civil 3D Geotechnical Modeler reads AGS files without additional configuration. Engineers import the file and access complete subsurface data sets organized by location, depth, and material properties.

The modeler generates borehole logs displaying lithology, sample locations, and borehole-related test and groundwater information. Cross-sections visualize stratum boundaries and material transitions across multiple locations. Three-dimensional stratigraphic surfaces model subsurface conditions for site-wide analysis.
